Why your laptop got slow — a technician's troubleshooting order

The real reasons Windows and Mac laptops slow down, in the order a technician checks them, plus the fixes worth doing before you buy new hardware.

Most slow laptops are not worn out. They are running a system that has accumulated eight years of startup entries, a drive that is 97% full, or thermal paste that gave up two summers ago. Working through the causes in the right order usually restores usable speed for the price of a service, not a replacement.

01

Step 1 — storage pressure

Both Windows and macOS need free space for paging and temporary files. Once a drive passes roughly 90% capacity, performance falls off sharply and stays there. Freeing 15–20% of the drive is the single highest-impact fix and costs nothing.

02

Step 2 — what loads at startup

  • Cloud sync clients duplicating the same folders
  • Two antivirus products fighting each other
  • Vendor updaters and 'helper' utilities from long-uninstalled software
  • Browser extensions that run on every page
03

Step 3 — thermals and throttling

A laptop that is fast for ten minutes then crawls is thermally throttling. Dust in the heatsink and dried thermal paste force the CPU to slow itself down to stay safe. Cleaning and repasting typically restores full clock speed and is a routine workshop job.

04

Step 4 — the drive itself

A mechanical hard drive is the most common bottleneck in any machine older than about six years. Cloning to an SSD is the upgrade with the biggest felt difference — boot times drop from minutes to seconds — and it keeps your existing setup intact.

On machines that already have an SSD, checking SMART health matters: a drive with reallocated sectors will feel slow before it fails outright.

05

Step 5 — the operating system

Only after the previous four checks is a clean reinstall worth considering. Done properly, with a verified backup and driver set prepared in advance, it removes years of accumulated cruft. Done casually, it loses data and drivers.

06

When replacement genuinely makes sense

  • Maximum supported RAM is 4GB or less
  • The machine no longer receives security updates
  • Repair cost approaches half the price of a comparable current model
  • The chassis, hinges or screen are failing alongside the slowness

Frequently asked

Can a slow laptop be fixed remotely?+

Software causes — storage, startup items, malware, system configuration — are handled well in a remote session. Thermal cleaning and drive replacement need the device on the bench.

How long does a speed-up service take?+

A remote software tune-up usually takes one to two hours. Cleaning, repasting or an SSD upgrade is typically a same-day workshop job.

Will I lose files during a tune-up?+

No. Cleanup and optimisation do not touch personal files, and any reinstall is only performed after a verified backup and your explicit approval.

Need this done for you?
